2007 will be the first season of Homewood Lacrosse! We are the 6th High School team to compete in the Birmingham Youth Lacrosse league, though there are two other new teams this seasons (John Carroll and Spain Park).

Just two years ago, BYLL had only two teams at the high school level, as well as the U15 and U13 levels, and the program was largely centered in the Mt. Brook area. Though they were called Mt. Brook and Vestavia, each team included boys from other schools. Before last season, a number of boys from the Hoover area approached Coach Chris Cos and asked him if he would help them form a Hoover program. Coach Cos organized a sign up and registration and received strong support, and Hoover Lacrosse became a reality.

I remember when Coach Cos (my teammate in the Magic City Men's Lacrosse Club) told me that he had 30+ players registered to play. I immediately recognized this as a watershed moment for lacrosse in the Birmingham area, knowing that Hoover would get the attention of other areas....and it did. I remember being excited when I officiated the first game played in Hoover's football stadium, between Mt. Brook and Hoover, as well as the first game played in Mt. Brook's stadium, last year's championship game, between the same two teams. I knew that this meant we'd have more teams for 2007.

So here we are. 30+ kids on the rosters of Homewood, Spain Park and John Carroll. I expect this to be a great season, and I expect there to be more new teams next year, and the year after that. Lacrosse is that kind of sport. Once kids get it in their system, they can't get it out. Many people continue to play well into their 40s and 50s, including myself, Coach Cos and Coach Goska of John Carroll. We just love it.

Welcome to Lacrosse! The Fastest Game on Two Feet!

Go Homewood! STICK IT!
